e-Newsletter Summer 2015

Dear Patient,

Happy Summer!  As progresses in the field of Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine are made, we are pleased to offer our patients new and innovative procedures.  Here at the Dermatology and Laser Centre of Studio City we are one of only a few facilities in the Los Angeles area to offer Kybella for the non-surgical treatment of submental fat, or double chin!* Kybella represents a revolutionary treatment, specifically a series of injections that targets the fat under the chin and defines the jaw line.*  There is virtually no discomfort, the treatment is non-surgical and can be as effective as liposuction.*

In this e-Newsletter, we also offer you a closer look at our Physician Assistants.  I consider Eric, Simona and Jim to be my physician extenders who allow me to offer you the highest level of knowledge and expertise. We often work as a team to perform surgical procedures and treat more difficult cases, and we have worked out protocols
for a variety of conditions to help retain continuity of care and predictable results across providers.

We wish to thank you for choosing our practice for all your skin care needs, and look forward to continuing to provide you with innovative, cutting-edge treatments and caring service!

If you suffer from a double chin, you’re not alone! According to a survey conducted by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, 68% of patients are bothered by their double chin, which can certainly ruin a good selfie! The good news is that we are now offering the first and only FDA-approved injectable medication that contours and improves the appearance of moderate to severe submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin.”* To learn more about submental fullness or this new treatment, contact our office to schedule a consultation.

We asked Eric Lovato, PA-C, Simona Fikhman, PA-C and C. Jim Fackrell, PA-C a few questions to get to know them a little better.

What inspired you to go into Dermatology?

Jim: I actually learned Dermatology out of necessity. While serving in the Special Forces, I provided health care to patients in Third World countries. During my deployment, I saw numerous skin-related issues, found that I enjoyed the Dermatology aspect of medicine, and continued to pursue knowledge in the field.

Simona: I have always had an interest in the skin and all of its functions. I love how in Dermatology there is so much variety in both patients and disease processes. This field offers me the chance to diagnose challenging medical conditions, and perform highly effective and pain-free surgical procedures daily.

Eric: I’ve always been intrigued by the practice of medicine. It’s dynamic, challenging, and gratifying. At the same time, I find peace in expressing my creative, aesthetic side in an artistic manner. For me, Dermatology is the perfect pairing of medicine and art.

Was there a medical procedure or innovation that changed the way you practice medicine?

Eric: Where to start? We live in an incredibly exciting time. Since becoming a PA in 2001, there have been radical advances in Dermatology. Everything from safer and more efficacious biologic medications in treating psoriasis, to longer lasting more natural appearing dermal fillers for wrinkles.

Jim: Cryotherapy using the CRYOGUN (freezing with liquid nitrogen) changed the way we practice Dermatology.* We can address everything from skin tags to warts and pre-cancerous actinic keratosis effectively, safely and
virtually pain-free.*

What is your most memorable patient response to a treatment or procedure?

Eric: At a follow-up visit a patient recounted how after a laser treatment of her sun damage (dark patches, spots, uneven tone), she subsequently washed her face twice and then broke into dance. Apparently she had become so accustomed to her face having ONLY when wearing heavy makeup that she assumed she still had on makeup and washed a second time. After realizing it wasn’t makeup, rather HER skin that was bright and unblemished, she did a celebratory dance!*

Simona: I had a patient suffering from acne tell me how her life has changed for the better because she is now not embarrassed to leave her house.* She has new opportunities with the confidence she gained with clear skin and I was so happy for her!*

Jim: I was taking care of a patient with rosacea who was always flaring with severe redness and flushing. He probably had the worst case I had ever seen. I performed a laser treatment that combined intense pulsed light (IPL) with the Nd:YAG 1064 laser. When the patient returned for follow-up after a course of treatments, his
redness disappeared and the flares were minimal!*

What do you consider your greatest success?

Jim: My greatest success is my children. They have developed into some of the best people that I know.

Eric: While I truly enjoy the immediate gratification of many of the cosmetic procedures, there is nothing more gratifying than successfully removing a potentially life-threatening skin cancer.

Simona: My greatest success thus far has been becoming a Physician Assistant and to be able to say that I love my job.
