What are age spots?

Age spots are those unsightly, unavoidable brown spots that develop along the face, hands, arms, and shoulders. These areas of the body are at a greater risk because they see the most amount of sunlight.

What causes them?

When we expose our skin to ultraviolet (UV) light, the production of melanin is accelerated. Melanin is the pigment in our skin that produces a darker color. This helps to explain the process behind tanning, but when we are frequently exposed to the UV rays over long periods of time, a higher concentration of melanin will be clumped together, and age spots will develop.
