Hemangiomas
What are hemangiomas?
Hemangiomas are noncancerous birthmarks that appear as a rubbery, bright red nodules of extra blood vessels. It is common for a hemangioma to grow during the first year of one’s life, and then recede over time. If a child has one at infancy, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for him or her to see little to no signs of it by age 10.
Hemangiomas can be found anywhere on the body, but most common places are the face, scalp, back, and chest. Usually, only one birthmark will be visible, but in some cases, a child could have multiple marks.
What are the causes?
A clear cause has not been determined, though it could be hereditary. What we do know is that a hemangioma occurs when an abnormal amount of extra blood vessels group together.
